Every October, credit unions around the world come together to celebrate International Credit Union Day®, a day dedicated to recognizing the history, achievements, and cooperative spirit of the global credit union movement.
This year, International Credit Union Day falls on Thursday, October 15th, marking the 78th anniversary of this special celebration.
What Is International Credit Union Day?
International Credit Union Day celebrates what makes credit unions different. Since 1948, ICU Day allows credit unions to reflect on that history, celebrate the difference they make, and thank the members who are at the heart of the movement. Credit Unions around the world join the celebration!
Credit unions are member-owned financial cooperatives. Instead of being focused on outside shareholders, credit unions are built around serving members and helping them achieve their financial goals.
A Movement Built on Community
The credit union movement began with a simple idea: people working together to help one another achieve greater financial opportunity.
That cooperative philosophy dates back to the 19th century when early credit societies were established in Europe. Over time, the idea spread across the world and eventually became the global credit union movement we know today.
Today, credit unions continue that tradition by helping members save, borrow, plan, and build stronger financial futures—while supporting the communities they call home.

For nine decades, we’ve been proud to be part of the credit union movement and to help generations of members reach their financial goals. From savings and checking accounts to auto loans, mortgages, and more, our goal has always been to provide financial products and personal service that help our members move forward.
